Parent/carer workshops

Man looking at My Goal resource

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about our workshops for parents and carers of school-aged children.

What will I learn? Why should I go?

Like all school-aged students, children on the autism spectrum benefit from strong, positive relationships between the home and school. Our workshops use evidence based materials and practical resources to help support these relationships.

You should attend one of our workshops if you want to:

  • Develop positive relationships with your child’s teacher and school
  • Receive the most up-to-date information on autism
  • Meet other families and to be part of a network in your community

How do I register to attend a workshop?

Check our home page for our available workshops and click on the link to the workshop in your area. After you’ve registered, we will send you email confirming your registration. We will also let you know by email about any unavoidable changes to the date or venue.

Once you have registered you will then receive:

  • Access to parent networks, local expertise and information
  • Trained facilitators to guide you through evidence based material
  • Access to Positive Partnerships online learning which provides dedicated additional resources

Why haven’t I received my confirmation email?

Check your spam folder; your conformation email may have been misplaced there. If your confirmation cannot be found, send an email at parentcarer@autismspectrum.org.au and let us know which workshop you registered for and you’re first and last name.

My child has high functioning autism or Asperger’s, will the workshop be relevant?

Yes the workshop is suitable for all school-aged children across the autism spectrum.

What is the cost of the workshop?

There is no cost to attend the workshop. The Australian Government Department of Education and Training funds our workshops through the Australian Government's Helping Children with Autism package.

Will food be provided at the workshop?

Yes! You will receive morning tea, lunch and refreshments. We cater to special dietary requirements. Just let us know what you need when you register.

Are there resources for me to use at home?

Yes. You will receive a workbook with a great deal of comprehensive information that we will discuss during the workshop.

Can anyone attend a parent/carer workshop?

These workshops give parents and full-time carers of school-aged children on the autism spectrum the opportunity to share their experience and knowledge. We often find that parent to parent networks of support develop in this safe and confidential environment. To help aid this process, the workshops are only available to parents and full-time carers.

All our parent/carer workshop materials are available online. Unlike these workshops, the online course is available to help anyone who supports a student with autism.

If you are a teacher or school leader we invite you to take a look at our Professional Learning Program.

Can I bring my child to the workshop?

Unfortunately we do not have facilities at the workshops for children to attend. Please make your own arrangements for childcare.

If you are a breast feeding mother, contact us at parentcarer@autismspectrum.org.au so we can make sure there are facilities for you at the venue.

We also try to keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing other members of the workshop.

What if I am unable to attend any of the workshop dates?

If you cannot attend one of our parent/carer workshops in person, the workshop materials are also available online. Our online courses are available to help you work in partnership with your child’s school.

When is the next workshop in my area?

You can find a list of our upcoming parent/carer workshops as well as access to online registration here.

Registration for each workshop will open six (6) weeks prior to the workshop date. Depending on the number of registrations received, online registrations will remain open until two days prior to the workshop or until all available spaces are filled.
